The Maniototo is the name of the plain on which Kokonga Lodge stands. "Mania" means plain and "toto" translates as blood. There is some debate as to the meaning. The name refers to either the glorious blood-red sunrises experienced frequently in the area or the "bloody" battles fought on the plains when Maori inhabited the area. The Maniototo landscape is unique in Central Otago. No where else is there such a wide sprawling plain surrounded by velvetmountains with rocky tors, that speak of secrets yet to unfold in its deep brooding valleys.
