The Moa belongs to the Ratite family, a group of flightless birds which also includes the Kiwi. Vast numbers of Moa once roamed the lowland areas of Central Otago and may have been hunted to extinction within a century of human arrival to New Zealand. Throughout this area large finds of Moa bones have been made both in natural deposits such as swamps, where a large number of birds were trapped, as well as middens where they were cooked for food.
