Central Otago:
Central Otago is situated in the lower
South Island and is one of
New Zealand's most inland regions.
It is also the hottest, coldest and driest
region in New Zealand. "Central" as it
is affectionately known is a living
museum, strewn with historic features
preserved by the dry climate. This land of mountains, rivers,
rock and tussock under a "big" sky is a place of grandeur,
peace and beauty. People who visit never want to leave and
those that do always return.
The Maniototo is a sprawling plain within the Central Otago
region.
Situated in the Maniototo, Kokonga Lodge provides stylish
accommodation amid this astonishing and ever-changing
landscape. Overlooking the Taieri River and adjoining the
Central Otago Rail Trail, Kokonga Lodge sits on an elevated
10 acre landscaped site with views over the heart of the
Maniototo region. The Lodge faces the Kakanui Range to the
east, while the Ida Range rises to the north and the Rock and
Pillar Range forms the distinctive backdrop.
Seasons and Temperatures:
The Maniototo region can experience
extremes of temperatures and this makes for very distinct
seasons. Summers (December - March) are hot and dry with
temperatures between 15 - 30 degrees celsius, autumn (March
- May) is characterised by the magnificent colours of the autumn
foliage, winter (from June - August) brings snow and spectacular
hoar frosts in the valleys, temperatures range from -10 to 15
degrees celsius, spring (September - November) heralds new
growth, spring flowers and blossoms on the fruit trees.
